形容詞ultimate解「終極的、極度的」，即是most extreme，可以是best（最好）、worst（最差）、greatest（最偉大）、most important（最重要）等等。由於ultimate解「最XX」，所以是指明，需要加上定冠詞（definite article）the。例如，the ultimate test（極限測試）、the ultimate challenge（終極挑戰）、the ultimate responsibility（最終的責任）、the ultimate luxurious experience（極致的奢華體驗）。

Ultimate還可以指「最終的」，即是happening at the end of a long process（經過一個漫長的過程，而最終發生的）。例句：It is hard to accurately predict the ultimate outcome of the experiment.（很難準確預測實驗的最終結果。）Who can tell the ultimate fate of our Universe？（有誰可以告訴我們宇宙的最終命運？）

形容詞ultimate可以加上字尾-ly變成副詞，例句：Ultimately, it's not my choice to make.（歸根究柢，這不是我的抉擇。）
