Demise

雖然多年前已經有人預測報紙的消亡（demise of newspapers），但事實上報業能夠適應技術上的轉變，持續為讀者提供易於掌握的重要新聞資訊。

名詞demise是書面語，有兩個意思。上文提到的demise指「終止、敗落、倒閉」，以前被認為是強大的東西的結束，尤指商業、工業或者系統。例句︰The new policy may lead to the imminent demise of important industries and record-high level of unemployment.（新政策可能導致重要行業即將消亡，以及創紀錄的高失業率。）The Internet age has not brought the demise of books. Many of us are still reading physical books.（互聯網時代並沒有帶來書籍的消亡，許多人仍在閱讀實體書。）

Demise還可以解「死亡」（death）。常見配搭的形容詞有imminent（逼在眼前的）、sudden（突然的）、unfortunate（不幸的）、sad（悲傷的）、tragic（悲劇性的）等等。例如，I am extremely sorry to hear about the sudden demise of your good friend.（聽到你好友突然死亡，我感到非常遺憾。）
