Indifferent

日前，警方頒發好市民獎，最年輕的得獎者是一個15歲女生，她在港鐵車廂勇敢出言制止男子企圖盜竊。她表示不明白其他乘客為何如此冷漠（indifferent），默默地冷眼旁觀。

形容詞indifferent由字首in-（不）加上different（不同）組成，照字面指not making any difference（沒有任何區別），indifferent即是解「冷淡的、漠不關心的」。要點出對甚麼冷淡，可以於indifferent一字後接介詞to。例句︰He is very selfish; he is indifferent to everything but his own needs.（他很自私，除了自己的需要，他對一切都無動於衷。）How can you be so indifferent to your wife's trouble？（你怎麼能對你妻子的困難如此漠不關心﹖）

Indifferent可以解「不感興趣的」。例句︰They were not always indifferent to political affairs.（他們並不總是對政治不感興趣的。）He remained indifferent to mathematics.（他對數學一直不感興趣。）

Indifferent還可以解「平庸的、一般的」。例如，This hotel is not good at all-the food was indifferent and the service was poor.（這家酒店一點都不好，食物一般，服務又差。）
