The status quo

學生愛看YouTube多過電視，連留言都一併看。有學生看到這句留言"It's hard for Asians to penetrate into the American market, but she has definitely broken the status quo."知道前面指「亞洲人很難打入美國市場」，但想問status quo的意思。

學生不懂status quo一詞絕不奇怪，status quo不是plain English，根本完全保留了拉丁文的拼寫。Status quo解「現狀」，尤其是關於社會或政治問題，通常要加定冠詞（definite article）the，因為現狀是獨有的。

The status quo常配動詞maintain，指「維持現狀」。例句：The government strove to maintain the status quo.（政府力圖維持現狀。）另外，the status quo還可以配動詞preserve（保留）、defend（維護）、break（打破）、change（改變）、restore（恢復）、detest（嫌惡）等。不想用status quo指「現狀」，也有很多plain English的字詞可以代替，例如，the present situation、the current status、the existing circumstances等等。
