No hard and fast rule

有些同事做事很死板，不曉得轉彎，最好你跟他說事情必須怎樣做，他跟着做便是了。事實上，大多事情都是沒有硬性規定（no hard and fast rule），而是需要依據實際的情況，再作出適當的調整。

形容詞fast單是指「快的」已經可用於多個情況。「移動迅速」可以用fast形容，例如，the world's fastest swimmer（世界上最快的游泳選手）、take the fast train（乘坐快速列車）。

Fast也可以指「迅速發生的」，例如，I want a fast response.（我希望得到迅速的回覆。）This website offers a fast delivery in two days.（這網站提供兩天快速交貨服務。）

還有，fast亦可以指「做事迅速」，例如，a fast learner（學得快的人）、a fast worker（做事迅速的職工）、a fast reader（閱讀速度很快的人）。

至於hard and fast rule中的fast一字，解「牢固的」；hard and fast連在一起指「不容變更的」。例句：There is no hard and fast rule of how this should be done.（沒有硬性規定應該怎樣做。）
