Plunge

英國新上任首相銳意改革，公布一籃子減稅刺激經濟方案。可是，投資者擔心英國激進減稅會導致通脹失控及財政危機，英鎊滙價隨即急瀉（plunge），幾乎貼近美元1:1價位。

動詞plunge不但指「下跌」，還有「非常突然和迅速」之意，即是「暴跌、驟降」。英鎊兌美元滙價幾日內瀉近7%，過去12個月累計貶值22%，絕對可以用plunge形容。The pound plunged nearly 5% at one point to US$1.03.（英鎊一度暴跌近5%至1.03美元。）The pound has plunged to its lowest value against the US dollar since 1971.（英鎊兌美元滙率已跌至1971年以來的最低水平。）

Plunge除了指「價值、比率暴跌」，還可以指「某人或某物驟然下降、驟然移動」。例句︰The plane plunged into the sea after the pilot panicked during a storm.（機師在暴風雨中驚慌失措，飛機墜入大海。）The climber lost grip and plunged dozens of feet from the mountain.（那登山人士鬆了手，從山上跌下幾十尺。）
