First come, first served

First come, first served

日前香港快運航空送出約2.1萬張免費機票,以先到先得(first come, first served)形式進行,但有市民覺得抽籤較為公平。

「先到先得」的英文是first come, first served,而不是first come, first「serve」。First come, first served一語中,為甚麼第一個動詞come用現在式(present tense),而第二個動詞served用完成式(perfect tense)﹖

「First come」指「先到」,「first served」則指「先得到服務」,是被動語態(passive voice)。全句加上主語(subject),可以寫成If you come first, you will be served first.(如果你先到,你將會先獲得服務。)

舉幾個用了first come, first served的例子。The free tickets were given out on a first-come, first-served basis.(免費機票按照先到先得的原則送出。)Sorry, we don't accept reservations. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.(抱歉,我們不接受預訂,座位安排將遵循先到先得的原則。)We need to arrive there early tomorrow since the seats are first come, first served.(明天我們需要早些到達那裏,因為座位先到先得。)
