Stimulate

政府今年再派發5,000元消費券，希望刺激（stimulate）消費。相信不少市民沒有因而多了消費，但是消費券絕對幫補到日常的必要開支。

動詞stimulate可以解「刺激、激發、激勵、促進」，即是使某事發展或變得更加活躍。Stimulate是及物動詞（transitive verb），需要後接受詞（object）去說明刺激甚麼，句子意思才會完整。例句︰The Financial Secretary believed this year's vouchers will stimulate consumption spending and help to boost the economy by 0.6%.（財政司司長相信今年的消費券會刺激消費，有助提振經濟0.6%。）How to stimulate discussion among students during online classes?（如何在網上課堂時激發學生討論﹖）

Stimulate也可以解「使興奮、使激起興趣」，常用句式：to stimulate something，或者to stimulate somebody to do something。例如，The trip has stimulated my interest in Japanese history and culture.（這次旅行激發了我對日本歷史和文化的興趣。）Good teachers stimulate students to think critically and question more.（好老師會激發學生批判思考並提出更多問題。）
