香港人的英文水平（English proficiency）如何？參考2018年的IELTS成績，香港考生的平均成績有6.53分，亞洲排行第3，比第一低了0.35分。

名詞proficiency解「熟練」，即是良好的能力和技能水平。要描述熟練的程度，可以用level of proficiency。例句︰All positions of this company require high level of proficiency in written English.（該公司的所有職位都要求英文寫作水平高。）Students' low level of English proficiency reduced their class participation.（學生的英文水平低，令他們減少參與課堂。）

改變字尾，可以將名詞proficiency變成形容詞proficient（精通的、熟練的）。想指出在那方面擁有熟練的技巧，可以用句式to be/become proficient at/in something。例如︰He took a cake decorating course in France and became proficient at making beautiful cakes.（他在法國上了蛋糕裝飾課程，變得精於製作漂亮的蛋糕。）He is proficient in three languages.（他精通3種語言。）

形容詞proficient也可以加上字尾-ly，變成副詞proficiently（熟練地）。例如︰Many Chinese immigrants have lived in Canada for years but still cannot speak English proficiently.（許多中國移民在加拿大生活了多年，但仍然不會說英語。）
