The five demands

市民連月來示威，希望政府回應五大訴求（the five demands）。特首林鄭月娥終於明確回應其中一項，但答案是不會成立獨立調查委員會調查警隊，因為現時已有監警會。問題是若市民相信監警會，就不會有此訴求。

Demand解「強烈要求」，劍橋字典把它定義為「to ask for something forcefully, in a way that shows that you do not expect to be refused」（強烈要求某東西，表明你不預期被拒絕）；朗文字典則定義為「a very firm request for something that you believe you have the right to get」（對你認為有權獲得的東西提出非常堅定的要求）。市民明顯不期望特首斷然拒絕成立獨立調查委員會。

Demand可用作名詞或動詞。例句︰The government has been reluctant to respond to the five demands.（政府一直不願回應五大訴求。）Protesters demand the government to fully withdraw the extradition bill.（示威者要求政府完全撤回逃犯條例修訂草案。）另外，demand可解「需求、需要（時間、精力、特定數量等）」，例如supply and demand（供求）；This intricate work demands a lot of concentration.（這項複雜的工作需要很大的專注力。）
