Make a mountain out of a molehill

浸大學生會會長因購買鐳射筆而遭警方拘捕，指其涉嫌藏有攻擊性武器，卻沒有證據證明他購買鐳射筆是用作攻擊用途。部分鴨寮街檔主更收起鐳射筆，不再出售。警方立即遭炮轟製造白色恐怖、小事化大。

小事化大英文可以說to make a mountain out of a molehill。Mole是鼴鼠，在泥土挖洞居住，挖起的泥土在地面形成一座座小丘，稱為molehills。將細小的molehill當成大山mountain，就是比喻將小問題看作非常嚴重的問題，或把不重要的事情看成事關重大。例句︰You don't need to call my parents. You're making a mountain out of a molehill.（你不需要給我父母打電話，實在小事化大。）Don't make a mountain out of a molehill！You have a bad headache, not a brain tumour.（不要小事化大！你頭痛得厲害，而不是有腦腫瘤。）

另外，不用比喻，可以簡單用動詞exaggerate或者overreact指「誇大」、「反應過度」。例句︰The threat of the virus to humans has been greatly exaggerated in the media.（媒體大大誇大了那病毒的威脅。）The police has been accused of overreacting in arresting a student who bought ten laser pointers.（警方拘捕一名購買了十支鐳射筆的學生，被指反應過度。）
