Silent Night

Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright.《Silent Night》（《平安夜》）這首聖誕頌歌（Christmas carol）大家必定耳熟能詳。這首歌是在1818年的平安夜（Christmas Eve）首次被演出，約有200年歷史。

平安的夜晚是應該寧靜的，silent解「寂靜無聲的」，常用作形容環境。例句：This garden was completely silent in the morning.（這個花園在早上鴉雀無聲。）

除了形容環境，silent可以指人「沉默寡言、不作聲的」。例句：He was silent all night long.（他沉默了一整夜。）I have the right to remain silent.（我有權保持緘默。）

其實，silent並不限於形容聲音，形容文字、文獻也可，解「未作記述的、未提及的」。例句：The law is silent on this issue.（在這一問題上，法律無明文規定。）The novel is silent on the reason for the protagonist's sorrow.（這部小說沒有說明主角為何悲傷。）
