Left unattended

上星期一名13歲男童獨留在家，期間懷疑電綫短路導致失火，父母涉嫌忽略看管兒童而被捕。原來根據現行《侵害人身罪條例》，16歲獨留在家是犯法，法例是否過時？香港的合法婚姻年齡也是16歲呢！

「獨留在家」可以繙譯為stay at home alone，書面語則可以說left unattended at home。Unattended指「無人看管的、無人照料的」。例如，Children should not be left unattended at home.（兒童不應獨留在家。）Never leave your cooking unattended.（切勿在無人看管的情況下煮食。）

Unattended是由動詞attend的過去分詞（past participle）attended加上字首un-組成。動詞attend本身有幾個意思，可以解「參加、照料、注意」。例句︰We felt discouraged that no one attended the meeting.（沒有人參加會議，令我們感到氣餒。）The injured woman was attended by paramedics.（那受傷的女士由醫護人員照料。）Considerations will include abilities to work independently, attend to details, and produce quality writing.（考慮因素包括獨立工作、處理細節和高質寫作的能力。）
