Beat the heat

今年夏天特別炎熱！最近發現消暑降溫（beat the heat）的好方法，就是搽冰涼薄荷的防曬露。不要小看它的冰涼效果，可以維持近半個小時，已經足夠應付上班的路程。

「消暑」英文叫beat the heat，是不是很生動？動詞beat解「打敗、戰勝」，beat the heat直譯豈不是「戰勝暑氣」﹖多有決心、多豪氣！

根據《牛津字典》，beat the heat中的beat一字其實指avoid（防止、避免）。除了beat the heat，還常用beat the traffic。例句：He always runs a fan and an air conditioner simultaneously in order to beat the heat.（他經常同時開風扇和冷氣，以消暑降溫。）

If we leave early tomorrow, we should beat the traffic.（如果我們明天早出門，應該可以避過交通堵塞。）

另外，常用語beat the clock也非常生動。Beat the clock即是「與時間競賽，在特定的時間前，趕快完成工作」。例句：Please do not wait until the last minute and try to beat the clock.（請不要等到最後一分鐘才趕工。）
