Rule of thumb

烹調中菜的時候，我從來不會用甚麼茶匙、湯匙來量度調味料的分量，都是憑經驗估計。不過，煮西餐則戰戰競競，看着食譜一步一步煮，大概是因為缺乏煮西餐的經驗。

基於經驗的行事法則，英文稱為rule of thumb。《牛津字典》將rule of thumb定義為「a broadly accurate guide or principle, based on practice rather than theory（大致準確的指南或原則，基於實踐而不是理論）」。例如，A useful rule of thumb is that you need to cook a chicken for 20 minutes for each pound it weighs.（一個有用的經驗法則：每一磅雞需要煮20分鐘。）

又例如，The rule of thumb of a successful mobile app is fun.（成功手機應用程式的法則就是有趣。）

Rule of thumb除了常配形容詞useful（有用的），還有good（好的）、simple（簡單的）、widely-adopted（廣泛採用的）等等。
